Come spring, I work on these watercolors as flowers bloom seasonally in succession. I paint from direct observation of the flowers. That is, the timing of blooming determines my subject. Early on, I concentrated on an isolated bloom surrounded by a lot of empty space. This emptiness felt essential as rest from the energy of the flower and in counterpoint to the burst of color and the details of each flower. This composition developed stillness, perhaps, allowing for more considered observation from the viewer.
